Charleston, South Carolina; d. Washington, DC. Grimke was born a slave and became one of the most outstanding men of his race in the 19th century, graduating from Harvard Law School in 1874. He was outspoken in fighting racism and was a promoter of African-American social issues. He was appointed consol to Santo Domingo by President Cleveland, and President McKinley appointed him spokesman of the National Colored League.
