Dark green cloth with bright gilt title to the spine, woodland scene in blue & green to front, light green border to front that is partly rubbed away. 7 1/2 x 5 inches, top page edge gilt, rest deckled, tight. 1906 Christmas inscription on ffep. Photogravure portrait plus 11 additional woodland scenes, reproduced from photographs taken by the author. 155 pp. The book is unopened except for the first several leaves.  Very good. Hardcover.

It was Dr. Gray's custom to spend his summer vacations in the Wisconsin woods. These "musings" were selected by him for publication a few months before his death. 12 chapters, including The Camp-fire; Nature and the Supernatural; Nature and Culture; The Tragical in Nature; Hunting; Through a Forest; &c.

William Cunningham Gray (1830-1901), b. East Hamilton, Ohio; d. Oak Park, Illinois. His first career was in law, being admitted to the Bar in Ohio (1852), but soon changed to journalism, founding the Tiffin (Ohio) Tribune. After editing this and another Ohio newspaper he moved to Cincinnati (1867) establishing a printing business. After the Presbyterian periodical The Interior was destroyed in the great Chicago fire of 1871 he was asked to take charge of the restoration and production of of it, which he accomplished with great success for over thirty years. He received the honorary degree of Ph.D. from the University of Wooster in 1874.
