Joseph Hilary Michael Whiteman (1906-20070 educated in London, Cambridge, and at the University of Cape Town, where he was professor of mathematics, serving in the mathematics department from 1939 to 1971. He was from a young age interested in his inner sensations and recorded his thoughts and experiences on the subject all of his life. He claimed to experience out-of-body sessions and what he termed Active and Continuous Recollection.
