"The State Engineer and Surveyor of New York receives frequent requests for certified copies of ancient field notes and maps showing tracts of land which were surveyed and recorded before 1800...Those most frequently requested are of "Malcomb's Purchase," and of "Totten and Crossfield's Purchase," and of "The Old Military Tract," of which tracts the notes and the maps are of great value to all concerned. It has therefore been thought best to make literal reproduction of these old field notes and to make photographic certified copies of these ancient and perishable maps and to publish them separately in pamphlet form so that in future those who need them can obtain fac-simile certified copies free of cost. Copies of this pamphlet with the four included maps have been sent to each county clerk's office in the State, as well as to those land-owners and attorneys who are known to be interested in these tracts." - Extract from Annual Report of 1903 (State Engineer of New York).
"This short volume published in 1903 contains certified copies of four original maps that were on file at the time in the office of the Secretary of State. These copies were certified by William Judson, State Engineer and Surveyor of New York. The text of the volume are copies of the original field notes from the surveyors of Macomb's Purchase, Totten and Crossfield's Purchase and the Old Military Tract." - New York State Library online.
