The author begins with controversies which stirred among the Scotch-Irish of Ireland due to the Arianism supposedly taught by a professor at Glasgow, and how families chose to leave Ireland for America due to religious reasons. He recounts the settlement of Salem, New York, in the 1760's, the establishment of the Presbyterian church there about 1765, and the history from then until the mid 1870s.
