Schleiermacher placed the concept and experience of faith within the subjective feelings of man, and attempted to separate the proofs of God and the Christian faith from the restrictions of rational thought. He sought a unified concept of the inner religious life and outward social relations. He is considered by many to be a pivotal theologian in Protestantism. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe translator: Frederica Maclean Rowan (1814-1882), b. West Indies; d. London, England. Her father was a brevet major in the 4th West India Regiment, who died the same year that she was born. Her mother, a Norwegian, moved with her children to Copenhagen, where Frederica became proficient in four languages. An author and translator, she translated The Life of Schleiermacher from the German in 1860. \"Miss Rowan acted for some years as secretary to Sir Francis Henry Goldsmid, and was of assistance to him in his parliamentary and philanthropic work. She had great social gifts, and her friends were many. She was not an advocate of the political emancipation of women.
