Sherburne, New York; studied music in Europe before returning to the United States to teach music. He was in Chicago from 1861 to 1874, when he became the choir director and organist of the Broome Street Tabernacle in New York City. He founded the Church Choral Union in 1881, and was an active writer and publisher of sacred music. He is the author of the hymn \"Yield Not to Temptation\" and the author of more than fifty hymn collections and music theory textbooks. In 1886 he became dean of the Summer School of Music at Chautauqua, N.Y.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLuther Orlando Emerson (1820-1915), b. Parsonsfield, Maine; d. Cambridge, Massachusetts. Emerson studied under Isaac B. Woodbury, and afterwards began to teach singing, direct choirs, and to compose his own music.
