Mayfield's note records his purchase of this book in 1957, with the business card of the Washington, DC, bookshop attached. He remarks that this was the first and last American edition, that "Benjamin Swift" was the pseudonym of William Romaine Paterson, English historian and novelist. He also notes that this copy once belonged to Robert Herrick (1868-1938), educator and novelist, for many years professor of literature in the University of Chicago.
