Stevens, William Bacon. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost, the great Need of the Church; A Sermon preached in St. Bartholomew's Church, New-York...on the occasion of the Eighth Anniversary of the Evangelical Knowledge Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church. New-York: Protestant Episcopal Society for the Promotion of Evangelical Knowledge, 1855. First Edition.
Printed wrapper, a few small chips to the edges, 5 3/4 x 9 inches, 27 pp., infrequent pencil marginalia, center horizontal crease. Good. Pamphlet.
A sermon on Acts 1:5 with emphasis on the need of the Holy Ghost for conversion of sinners and empowerment of ministers. He speaks against formalism without condemning rites themselves. He condemns rationalism and the "evil spirit of liberalism." He bemoans the low spiritual state of church members and pleads for a spiritual renewal through the help of the Holy Ghost.
A penciled note by a former owner on p. 27 is insightful: "Little did he know that within two years one of the greatest outpourings of the Spirit in North America will take place, the Third Great Awakening, 1857-1858."
