Stedman, Edmund Clarence; Hutchinson, Ellen Mackay. A Library of American Literature from the Earliest Settlement to the Present Time, in Eleven Volumes. New-York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1889-1891. [6484]

Complete eleven volume set in olive cloth decorated in black & gilt, bindings bright and clean, 7 x 9 3/4 inches. Former library set with library labels removed from spines, bookplates, ink name stamps and ink numbers on the title pages, rear end papers with date due slips and labels; some rear free end papers with torn patches from removed labels. These books are a bit heavy for their bindings, and some end paper hinges have been repaired with pH neutral glue. The books once had paper wrappers (added by the library) which is why they have remained so nice, but there are some faint outlines on some covers from old removed cello tape. Over 6,000 clean pp. with steel engravings and full-page wood engraved portraits. Very good. Hardcover.

Please factor in the shipping costs (found at checkout) when you decide by buy this.  The set is 45 lbs shipping weight, and we will make use of two sturdy boxes to send it to you.  It will ship well-protected, as you have come to expect, and we think it will travel better divided into two parcels rather than in one very heavy one.

"This extraordinary man-woman editorial partnership revived neglected works and created the essential reference for American studies for generations of scholars. The 6000 pages of the 11 volumes contain over 2500 selections by more than 1100 authors. The country’s growth is traced—in every genre—through representative writings from the Great Awakenings, Independence, National Literature, the American Renaissance, the slavery debate, dialect writings, and the growth of the sciences, interspersed with over 1200 poems." - bartleby online.

Includes the handbill "To the Subscribers..." printed on green paper announcing the addition of the eleventh volume of the series, to contain biographies of all of the authors featured in the first ten volumes, plus an index to the set.  This is tipped in at the beginning of vol. ix.
