Lewis, New York; d. Ogdensburg, New York. He was educated at Middlebury College, Vermont, the General Theological Seminary, New York City, and then at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He left the Episcopal Church and was baptized Roman Catholic in 1846, and ordained into the priesthood in 1850. After serving parishes in the Albany Diocese he was made first bishop of the new Diocese of Ogdensburg, in 1872.
