It was first published in 1664. It went through 13 English editions over the next 130 years. Hardy was born at Frampton, Dorsetshire, and matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford, in 1656, graduating with a B.A. in 1659. He was ejected from his pulpit at the Restoration for refusing the required oaths. He was accepted as a family chaplain and preached in Charminster, Dorsetshire, under circumstances that protected him from punishment by the Crown. In 1667 he was received as a preacher at Poole, Dorsetshire, where it is said he evinced strong character and influence. He remained there until investigated by a royal commission in 1682, which again ejected him from his pulpit, specifically for \"not wearing the surplice and omitting the cross in baptism.\" He sought to preach privately, but continued to be harassed for his views.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"He published, with his initials: 1. 'The Guide to Heaven;' second part, with title 'The Second Guide to Heaven,' 1687.
