Samuel Irenaeus Prime (1812-1885), b. in Ballston, N.Y.; graduated at Williams College in 1829, entered Princeton but suffered from illness and did not complete his studies. After pastoring several churches he became editor of the “New York Observer”, and also served as Secretary of the American Bible Society. Prime was Vice President and Director of the American Tract Society and of the American and Foreign Christian Union, as well as a trustee or board member of a large number of beneficent or religious organizations. He wrote over 40 books and contributed frequently to the periodicals of his day.
