The author, Margaret Oliphant Wilson, was a Scottish novelist and and historical writer, with a prolific output during the Victorian era. She lived for some time in Florence and Rome, while recovering from consumption. Widowed at a young age, she supported her family through her writing. She contributed over 100 articles to Blackwood’s Magazine, and her enormous body of work includes more than 120 books - novels, travel, histories, and literary criticism.
