John Murray (1741-1815), born in Alton, England, considered the father of an organized Universalist church. In 1770 he sailed for the New World, and preached in a Baptist church in New York city. In 1774 he settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and counted among his friends Generals Washington and Greene. His universalist views brought danger and contempt upon him from his contemporaries. In 1793 he settled in Boston and built up an extensive Universalist church in that place.
