Joseph Bickersteth Mayor (1828-1916), the son of missionaries, was born in Ceylon. He was a prodigy in languages, and at an early age learned Latin & Greek. His education was completed in England at Cambridge University; afterward he became Professor of Classics, King’s College, London, and was honored with a degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of London. He was a scholarly yet spiritual-minded writer and commentator.
