George Matheson (1842-1906) Scottish minister, author and hymn writer, first in his class at the University of Glasgow in classics, logic, and philosophy. He became totally blind at age 20, yet continued in his resolve to enter the ministry. His life was marked with usefulness and spiritual mindedness; among his achievements are preaching for Queen Victoria at Balmoral; Baird Lecturer (1881); St. Giles Lecturer (1882); and in 1890 elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was for thirteen years the minister of St. Bernard’s parish church in Edinburgh.
