Miller was a Presbyterian pastor, author, and for many years Editorial Secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Publication. During the American Civil War Rev. Miller served in leadership roles for the United States Christian Commission. His pastoral work was often blessed with great success, and he built up several large congregations during his ministries. According to his biographer John Thomson Faris, Rev.
