Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), b. & d. at Kinderhook, New York. Van Buren was the first American President born as an American, rather than as a British, citizen. An accomplished and careful politician, Van Buren mastered the intricacies of New York politics, earning the nickname "The Little Magician." He was a NYS Senator (1813-1820), NYS Attorney General (1815-1819), US Senator (1821-1828), Governor of New York (1829), US Secretary of State (1829-1831), US Minister to Great Britain (1831-1832), Vice President under Andrew Jackson (1833-1837), and President of the United States (1837-1841).
