John Morton Greene, D.D. (1830-1919), b. Hadley, MA; generally regarded as the originator of the idea of founding Smith College as a college for women, serving as a trustee of the college from its founding in 1871 until his death. He was for thirty years pastor of the Eliot Congregational Church in Lowell, Massachusetts. He served as trustee and overseer for several colleges and charity funds. His papers are kept at the Smith College Archives, from which we gleaned this information.
