Rev. Ebenezer Erskine (1680-1754), born in the Prison of the Bass, where his father and mother were incarcerated during a time of persecution against the Presbyterians of Scotland. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, minister of several parishes in Scotland. In 1732 he was chosen moderator of the synod of Perth & Sterling, and in his opening address he censured some of the proceedings of the General Assembly. This was the beginning of a breach which culminated in the separation of a part of the Church of Scotland into that body known as the Seceders.
