John Watts de Peyster (1821-1907), Adjutant General of New York State, served in the NYS Militia during the Mexican-American War and the US Civil War. He was a noted author on military history.
The author argues that the success of the American arms at Saratoga was mainly due to Schuyler's "ability, his moral courage, and his complete devotion to the cause he espoused - whatever may have been the inciting motives - made such a result a possibility."
