"Mr. Crockett was an ardent and assiduous student of the subject. Probably he was unequalled in his day in familiarity with the past and present of this region, of which he was a native and life-long resident. Something of the enormous labor bestowed upon the preparation of the work may be seen in the list of references in the Introduction...To the selection of material Mr. Crockett brought a discriminating sense of historical values, which enabled him to pick out of the mass those items of permanent historic value...He also had an excellent literary gift, and the result is a readable, accurate and informative narrative of deep and abiding human interest." - Foreword.
