Francesco Crispi (1818-1901) "was the dominant political figure in Italy in the last fifteen years of the 19th century. As a young man he was a follower of Mazzini, and played a prominent part in the Expedition of Garibaldi's Mille (1860). His two administrations (1887-1891), 1893-6) were marked by major political, social, and economic reforms, anti-socialism, and an aggressive foreign policy in Europe and Africa. He fell from power in 1896 after Italy's defeat at the Battle of Adua in Ethiopia." - The Oxford Companion to Italian Literature
