The author was the son of a celebrated Jewish Dutch jurist and professor of Indonesian law at the University of Utrecht. His mother was "a very religious Jew in The Hague." Ernest was raised as a nominal Christian, attending Christian schools in Indonesia, where his parents lived before returning to Holland when our author was 15. His family was sent to the Nazi prison in Rotterdam, during which time he had a heart conversion to Christianity. Cassutto becomes an evangelist in prison. He recounts his sufferings and the sufferings of others in the prison system. Includes his testimony of salvation, and that of his wife, and that of a fellow Jew converted under his ministry.
