The author was Principal and Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics in the United Presbyterian College, Edinburgh, at the time he delivered these lectures. After giving a brief history of unbelief, he concentrates on English Deism, the French Encyclopedists, German Rationalists, and the writers Strass, Rénan, and Mill.
