Rev. Alexander Whyte, D.D. (1836-1921), Free Church of Scotland divine, successor to Dr. R. S. Candlish at Free St. George's; successor to Dr. Marcus Dods at new College, Edinburgh. Dr. Whyte was an author of some note, with biographies of Samuel Rutherford, Lancelot Andrewes, James Fraser, and Sir Thomas Browne, among others to his credit. He also wrote a Commentary on the Shorter Catechism, Bible Characters, John Bunyan Characters, and other spiritual studies.
