William Francis Allen (1830-1889), American classical scholar, educated at Harvard; in 1867 became professor of ancient languages and history in the University of Wisconsin. During the American Civil War he and his wife ran a school for newly emancipated slaves on the Sea Islands of South Carolina. His Collection of Slave Songs (1867) of which he was joint-editor, was the first work of the kind ever published.
