The author shows that both Atheism and Pantheism are ancient and discredited philosophies in light of the revelation given us by God through the scriptures. He makes a very interesting and pointed argument that has some bearing on the more recently developed \"presuppositional\" argument regarding apologetics. Nairne argues that the proof we should focus on is that which establishes the authenticity of the Scriptures and that the Scriptures assume the existence of God.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"There are two distinct ways in which we arrive at the knowledge of a God. The one is by the examination of the works of nature, and has been already described; the other is by establishing the authenticity, genuineness and veracity of Divine Revelation...These two processes, which lead to the same conclusion, are, nevertheless, entirely independent of each other. It is a great, but not an uncommon mistake, to imagine, that we must, by help of what is termed the Natural Argument, be persuaded of the existence and attributes of a Supreme Creator, previously to any study of the word of God, or to any investigation of the proof on which the authority of the Bible is founded. Even Paley, with all his sagacity, seems to have fallen into this error...In each page of the Bible the existence of God is taken for granted...This whole process [of convincing by the Bible alone] would be gone through without the man's once adverting to what is called the Natural Argument - without his seeking or requiring one single proof, except the perfection of the record itself, and in the historical facts by which its claims to credence are supported.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCharles Murray Nairne (1808-1882), educator, born in Perth Scotland; died in Warrenton, Virginia. \"He was graduated at the University of St. Andrews in 1830, and afterward at Edinburgh. For some time he was assistant to Dr. Thomas Chalmers at Glasgow, and in 1847 he came to this country, where he taught at College Hill, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., and subsequently established a private school in New York. In 1857 he accepted the chair of moral and intellectual philosophy and literature in Columbia, which he held until he became professor emeritus in 1881. He received the degree of L. H. D. from the regents of New York in 1865.
