Pamphlet.

"The alarming prevalence of Sabbath-breaking in our country, and especially on the great thoroughfares at the South and West, has justly aroused the energies of numerous Christians for its suppression. These channels of communication are found to branch, divide and subdivide, reaching almost every village and hamlet in those sections, and spreading the contaminating influence of their vices and immoralities over nearly the whole of those fair portions of our land. The stern conviction of this truth, and the overwhelming influence upon religion which it threatens, have given an impulse to Christian effort there to check its progress, which should meet with a warm and zealous response from every heart devoted to the service of God and the honor of his name. The violation of the Sabbath is one of the leading obstacles to the success of the preached word in the West. In many places there, as well as South, this sin stalks abroad at noon-day unabashed; and not unfrequently the sportsman's gun and the traveller's carriage are heard by attentive worshippers in the house of prayer." - opening paragraph.

Dr. William Allen (1784-1868), former president of Dartmouth and Bowdoin colleges, author of the "Biographical Dictionary," was found to be traveling on the Sabbath while on a trip as a delegate to the River and Harbor Convention, held at Chicago. This was noticed by ministers in Wisconsin, and Allen was rebuked in print in the New York Observer.
