It was commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt and was one of the fastest and most luxurious steamers in operation. It caught fire on Long Island Sound, and all but four of its 143 passengers were killed. It remains as the worst shipping disaster in Long Island Sound history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWilliam Matticks Rogers (1806-1851), b. Island of Alderney, Guernsey; d. Boston, Massachusetts. He was sent to the United States when a boy, and lived with his uncle at Dorchester. He graduated at Harvard College (1827), studied theology at Andover, and became pastor of the Evangelical Congregational Church in Townsend Mass. (1830).
