Woodstock, Conn.; d. Cambridge, Mass. Rev, Holmes was a graduate of Yale College (1783), became pastor of churches in South Carolina and Georgia, and was the pastor of the First Church in Cambridge from 1792 to 1832. Rev. Holmes was one of the founding members of the Massachusetts Bible Society. He is remembered also as an historian, the author of \u003cem\u003eAnnals of America\u003c\/em\u003e (1805), a biography of Ezra Stiles, and he was the Corresponding Secretary of the Massachusetts Historical Society.
