Austin Flint (1812-1886), b. Petersham, MA; d. NYC. Educated at Amherst and Harvard, Flint was one of the premier American physicians of the 19th century and a pioneer in heart research. He was one of the founders of the Buffalo Medical College (1847), taught at several institutions, was appointed visiting physician to Bellevue Hospital in NYC; he was from 1861 to 1886 professor of the Principles and Practice of Medicine in Bellevue Hospital Medical College. He served as president of the New York Academy of Medicine (1875-1885); as president of the American Medical Association (1884); and elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society (1880).
