Stillwell, S. B.; Corwin, D. B.; et al. Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries, for the year 1896. [Harrisburg, PA]: Clarence M. Bush, State Printer of Pennsylvania, 1897. First Edition. [10918]
Black cloth, binding clean and very good, 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, "Compliments of Louis Strember" slip tipped in at front. Full of b/w plates, plus 25 color plates of animals (8) and fish (17). 457 text pages, includes index. A heavy volume with many plates. Very good. Hardcover.
B/w plates from photographs of many fishing sites around Pennsylvania, with full reports on stocking, descriptions of many lakes, of Game Wardens listing their arrests and destruction of illegal fishing devices, reports on hatcheries, etc. The color plates are unsigned but similar in style to the famous Denton plates of the New York reports from the same time period.
We do not think that they are chromolithographs, but we are not expert in identifying color plates. The colors were added in layers, we believe; we do not see dots in the print when looking with a magnifying glass; but your guess is probably better than mine. The text printed beneath each color image is not crisp at the edges when magnified, similar to a gravure print.
The color plates are The Loon; Hooded Mergauser; The Heron; Fish Hawk; Horned Grebe; Black-crowned Night Heron; Belted Kingfisher; The Mink; The Eastern or Banded Pickerel; The Shad; The Whitefish; The White Bass; The Pike Perch or Susquehanna Salmon; The Small Mouthed Black Bass; The Brook Trout; The Rainbow Trout; The Lake Trout; The Atlantic Salmon; The Carp; The Striped Bass; The Yellow Perch; The White Perch; The Brown Trout; The Rock Bass; The Calico Bass.
There are 20 black & white plates showing 3 additional fish per plate, 60 different kinds in all. Plus scores of plates of lakes, resorts, hatcheries, rivers, &c.
