Intricately decorated red cloth, spine & front cover in gilt, back cover in blind. All edges gilt, gilt & olive end papers, the 32 leaves are of heavy stock, a couple have some foxing. The illustrations are applied, the text leaves are bordered with cherubs and flowers, the numbered section leaved are adorned with cherubs. Each leaf is tipped in, as issued. There is an 1891 gift inscription written in German on the ffep. The book is written in German. Very good. Hardcover.

A gorgeous book that would make a terrific gift for a student of German.

Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838), born in France, driven with his parents to Germany during the French Revolution. He was a poet and a botanist, today best-known for his Peter Schlemihl, a fantasy book about a man who sold his shadow. "As a poet Chamisso's reputation stands high. Frauenliebe und -leben (1830), a cycle of lyrical poems set to music by Robert Schumann, by Carl Loewe, and by Franz Paul Lachner, is particularly famous." - wikipedia.

The illustrator, Paul Thumann (1834-1908), was a German illustrator and painter, professor at the Academy of Arts, Berlin. "He primarily worked as an illustrator, producing plates for books by Goethe, Tennyson, Chamisso, Heine and many others." - wikipedia.
