Horatius Bonar (1808-1889), Free Church Presbyterian, Scotland; author, hymn-writer and preacher. He visited Palestine as a member of the mission of inquiry to the Jews (1839) and took part in the Disruption (separation from the Church of Scotland). He was a popular preacher, wrote over 140 hymns, as well as many devotional books and biographies. A friend of revivals, he and his brother Andrew defended D. L. Moody's Scottish labors.

"A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Horatius Bonar is best known as the poet-preacher. Perhaps not so well known is his deep commitment to evangelical Christianity and of the movement of the Spirit of God in revival...Not only his preaching ministry but also his books were greatly used in conversion work." - Roberts, Revival Literature: An Annotated Bibliography, pp. 52-53.
